The KIHA52 diesel railcar is a dual-engine version of the KIHA20 series, designed for use on steep gradient lines. It was active for a long time nationwide, except in Hokkaido, even after the privatization of JNR. The 0 series represents the early classification of the 52 series, and its engine and other configurations differ from the later introduced 100 series.
