The "NISEKO" was an express passenger train between Hakodate and Sapporo. It operated using both locomotive-hauled coaches and diesel cars.
The coach train succeeded the express train "TEINE" and featured a single C62 class steam locomotive between Hakodate and Oshamanbe, double C62 class SLs between Oshamanbe and Otaru, and an ED76-500 class electric locomotive between Otaru and Sapporo.
Even after the C62 class SLs were replaced by DD51 class diesel locomotives, the train configuration saw no major changes. The "NISEKO" remained popular for a long time until it was replaced by series 14 trains.
