From 1960, when the headlights were upgraded to LP402, to the period before the installation of ATS, the prototypes of the 6th to 9th production batches were developed. These models were not equipped with smoke signal pipes, featured PS14 pantographs, and were fitted with LA12 lightning arresters. The center monitor on the front and the windows retained their original design.

The EF15 type DC electric locomotive, designed to meet post-war freight transport demands, saw 202 units built between 1947 and 1958.
Sharing components with the EF58 passenger locomotive, it featured MT41 or MT42 traction motors and LT129 bogies.
Variations arose due to multiple manufacturers and later modifications, such as sealed beam headlights and window designs.
Initially deployed on major lines like Tokaido and Tohoku, steep gradients on the Ou and Joetsu lines led to 24 units being converted into the EF16 type.
The EF15’s operations declined with the introduction of newer locomotives, ending in 1986.
Unit No.158 remains preserved by JR West.
