In 1937, the "Kamome" debuted as Japan's fourth express train, operating between Tokyo and Kobe. After being suspended due to World War II, it was revived in 1953 as the third express train following the "Tsubame" and "Hato," and the first express connecting Kansai to Kyushu. While it didn't feature observation cars like the Tōkaidō's expresses, it was the only express running on the Sanyo and Kyushu lines at the time. The train was made up of newly built passenger cars such as the Suha44 and Slo54, with a dining car replaced by a refrigerated Mashi49 model after a year.
The travel time from Kyoto to Hakata was 10 hours and 40 minutes, with steam locomotives pulling the train, including the exclusive C57 class in Kyushu. Unit 11, in particular, featured a deflector with wing and wave designs from 1954, emphasizing its special role. From 1957, the train gradually switched to lighter 10-series passenger cars, with the third-class cars changing from fixed seats to box seats. By 1961, the Kamome was retired and replaced by diesel express trains, with its route expanding to Kyoto, Nagasaki, and Miyazaki.
The Kamome name lived on through diesel trains, electric trains, and eventually, the Shinkansen.

This model represents the basic composition of the Kamome train from July 1954 to June 1957.
