With the full electrification of the Tōkaidō Main Line, express trains were hauled by electric locomotives across the entire route.
As the smoke-induced dirt was no longer an issue, the body color of the trains was changed from the previous maroon to a bright green. The trains became affectionately known by fans as the "Aodaishō" (Japanese Ratsnake), due to their vibrant color.
The Tsubame express was one of Japan's representative express trains, boasting a magnificent formation that included dining cars and observation cars.
